Interesting Centuries 3 Replies

This is probably a pretty silly idea for a discussion, but I thought I'd try it out anyway.   Most of the centuries in my area (Auburn, Alabama; Montgomery, Alabama; Columbus, Georgia) are pretty bor…

Hey northern NV and CA riders,
Come ride the Somersett Challenge Ride to Defeat ALS ride in Reno on August 21! There are 82, 50, or 30 miles options. I lost my mother to this dreadful disease 16 years ago. Please support this cause! See the link under Featured Events.

4 years ago my friend Frank created a century route with as much climbing as he could cram in. We dubbed the ride "The FRANK" which is not so much an homage but more of a way for us to remember who to blame. We had a steady rain for the first 30 miles but that kept the temperatures below 80 all day (for a change). I lost track of how many climbs there are but there are 4 that are over 20% and I saw 28% on my Garmin on 2 occasions. I think the weather front messed with my altimeter because this route has registered more elevation gain in previous years. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/41842268

Frank is also the ride director of the Columbus Fall Challenge, a 2 day, 220 mile weekend with 16,000+ ft. of climbing, so I have that to look forward to in a couple of months.

I'll be riding my century for July next Saturday, 7/24. My club is sponsoring a ride to raise money for a local man who refurbs bike for a Christmas give away. When he started 19 years ago, he gave away 18 bikes. Last year, he gave away over 1,000.

I have determined after today's 70 mile ride that I will not attempt a century with temps in the mid to upper 90's...or heat indexes above 100. It is amazing how much the heat taps your strength.

If you're interested... today, my hubby and I rode together [finally after not being to ride with him for over 2 months!] knowing temps would reach upper 90's. We hoped to be back before they did. Well...the day started with a morning low of 80 degrees [instead of 74] - not a good sign. We rode anyway. (My idea - I was firmly set on doing that long route up at the Bud plant that I hadn't been able to do since last year.)

I could tell that the temps exceeded 90 by the 1030-11am range. We got back just before 1pm. Those last couple of hours were a real test - physically...and especially mentally.

We took a turn to cut off a couple miles and a couple of hills. I knew that would cut my mileage...and by golly, I was going to get my computer to say 70, no matter what. So my hubby rested in the shade (since I had the key to the car) while I did a short 2-mile loop till my bike computer tripped that 70 mark. (Really, I wanted 75 for the day but stick a fork in me, I'm done!)

Most of the centuries for which I'm shooting (a couple as backup's) are in September with temps that will be 10...even 20 degrees cooler, depending. With those temps, a century would be no problem.

Today after 70 miles in these extreme temps, I'm tired but not slayed. I think this bodes well for my upcoming century endeavors. At least, I hope so! :-)

Hey Lou. If you're looking for another century, you can always come up here. We're suffering through a ride next weekend that has 9,300 ft. of climbing with 2 climbs that top out at 25%

@Lou Yeah, that's a fun descent but it is a bit short.
Lou Plummer Comment by Lou Plummer on July 18, 2010 at 4:31pm
I don't have another century scheduled until 7/31. My summer schedule lends itself more to lots of medium distance (40-60 miles) morning rides. Plus, It's freaking Southeast NC in July. So, while I've been getting 250-300 miles a week, there will only be one century in July. (Unless Ted shows up on my doorstep)
