Hi Michael, Punctures are a real pain, however in the last year i only has 2 punctures during my commute, i put that down to continental puncture resistant tyres. I do patch up the old tubes, however…

The lighter side of riding: Your least favorite things about being a cyclist

Must be punctures of mechanicals when out for a ride, in my running days you just put on the new balances and you were running, still enjoy riding Fun Run Robbie

Actually, I've already paid my dues in that regards (ie the "bam, bam bam" bit), but it turned out to be a manufacturer fault. All the tubes blew on the seam in the same spot. (This was a few months ago.) Popped in one from a different manufacturer…

Hah ! Rapunzel just sealed her fate, I try to never (if possible) talk about having those things ! Last week when I posed the question about tubes, I had three of them, bamb, bamb, bamb..... go flat. You best find some wood to knock on or something…

I haven't but that's pretty darn neat! However, I rarely get flats. I can go months without them. How often are you getting flats, Stewart?

E/Mail sent to Sandra Parsons

Dear Sandra,
I have just read your anti-cycling rant in today's Daily Mail. Yes i am indeed a 50 year old male who rides a bike to commute to work and at the weekend enjoy the Hertfordshire countryside with mt local club Verulam CC. I just wanted to say i also hold a car and motorbike licence and in my view "one of the most annoying menaces" on the road is the irresponsible car driver. I wish i had a £5 for ever time when it is my right of way the vehicle just speeds past , and if i had not… Continue

MIDDLE-AGED men who insiston proving they still have testosterone by cycling at ludicrous speeds are one of the most annoying menaces on the road. They sream abuse at any driver who has the temerity to pull ahead of them, and shake their head patronisingly at pedestrians forced to leap out of their way or be mown down.

To all you cyclists out there, get yourself a flashing blue it may save you from mad car drivers[ read the 3 letters from the uk's cycling weekly

Blue is the colour

A letter by Mr Peter Seymour of Dublin published in cycling weekly 14/1/10

Further to the brilliant[ in every sense of the word] letters on November 5 and December 17 issues , I too have started commuting and training in the winter lights with a blue flash light next to my helmet. The flashing blue light affords vulnerable cyclists the extra ‘force-field’ of protection against complacent motorists, desensitised to the warning light effect of a rear red light as a signal to e… Continue

Seen the Light

I’VE just finished reading your article in the 22/10 issue about winter and commuting, and couldn’t help but notice how ineffectual the rear lights were on the picture featured and how they blended and disappeared in the town traffic.

I have managed to solve this problem, however, what I am abou… Continue

Ah yes, I'd forgotten you commute. In that case, I'd use it, too! Heck, I may do that next time I change a tire set out, anyway. (Don't have an extra old one lying around at the moment.)

Hi FRR,
Thanks for noticing my bike...it was designed by my 5 year old granddaughter...the cat is me in the saddle is me.
I don't know Chico M. who plays on your rubgy club, but i'm sure that he's quite brilliant. My name comes from my town, Chico, CA. I visited York once, and my town is very similiar...lots of fun.
I read your homepage and am pretty impressed with your running times, especially the 1500. All you need is a swimsuit to become a world class triathlete.
Cheers,
Chico Brian

Thanks! I'm just a humble cyclist, who's not the best at anything cycling but rather likes to ride...and share that love of riding with others. :) Jimmy Carter is indeed from our sunny state. However, his hometown is an easy 3-4hr drive away. (Georgia is a big state.) My hubby has been down that way, but I haven't...not yet.

Alas, I am at work getting computers ready for the fall term at a school. No ride today - recovering and nursing a saddle sore. Good luck on the 10m tomorrow.

Stewart - Hope your ride met all your expectations today. Did the Jersey make you faster? I've been loving John and Scott's TdF podcasts. Have you ever met either of them?
