How's Your Season Been So Far?

Oh Jack - challenge your self and do the Ride Without Limits in Wake Forest the weekend after Bike MS. I'll see you at Bike Fest. Get ready to climb.

Foam rolling: When does it stop being torture?

The only pain I feel when using a roller is when working the IT bands. I can alleviate some of that by adjusting how much weight I put on the roller.

How's Your Season Been So Far?

How has 2010 been for you on the bike? Have you ridden as much as you planned to? Have you met your goals for the year so far? Is your fitness where you want it to be? My “season” started on March 6t…

Tour de France and Radioshack: 10 I told you so's in retrospect

Re: #10 - 3 wins doesn't come close to equaling 7 wins for Bert. For Andy, 3 spots on the podium do not equal a win and 7 more podium spots - plus Ulrich was a doper and let's hope Andy stays clean.…

A group to share stories about epic and not so epic 100-mile+ rides. Suggest routes. Let others know of organized rides in your area. Ask experienced century riders questions about training, nutrition and equipment.

Hey northern NV and CA riders, Come ride the Somersett Challenge Ride to Defeat ALS ride in Reno on August 21! There are 82, 50, or 30 miles options. I lost my mother to this dreadful disease 16 years ago. Please support this cause! See the link und…

The Pearl Izumi store has huge discounts on all of their bibs. I picked up some Elites for $50 cheaper than Amazon. As for bike fitting, Dr. Greg Combes of Velosmart in Southern Pines is second to none. He uses video, a functional movement test. He…

As Jack Buckley said, I really can't look at my cycling in seasons. I averaged 400 miles during the winter months and added a 100 more during the summer months so far. The only difference has been that the rides during the winter were frequent (almo…

I don't really think in terms of seasons. I rode right through the winter. I did have 3 goals this year. I have already missed 2 but I still feel good about my progress. My first goal is for 5,000 miles this year. I already have more than 3,000 and…

What We Think When We Watch the Tour

You watch the Tour and you think the whole country of France is nothing but rural beauty, punctuated by small villages and the occasional town that exists only as a place where bicycle races end. Perhaps your own regional pride forces you to defend the beauty of your little area of the States as a beautiful place too. Maybe it is. I like to think the Sandhills region of North Carolina is gorgeous, but you have to try to see it. On the roads of the Tour, you don’t have to try.

I need counseling

I will never (never) volunteer to be a ride leader again. On Saturday at my club ride, I got nominated to lead the B group of about 20 riders. I announced the length (55 miles), pace (20mph) and no-drop status of the ride. We'll regroup at rest stops. At our first rest stop, the A group boys said they wanted to come with us and agreed to our guidelines. Then they proceeded to go 23-24mph, stringing people all down the road and taking the big ego B-groupers with them. They disappear without a clue… Continue

Climb This!

Sunday, July 4th, I completed the Tryon (NC) Fabulous Fourth Metric Bike Tour. The ride’s website advertised total climbing of 7682.2 vertical feet in 68.3 miles. This information was compiled from the Delorme Topo Maps. I debated attenpting this as recently as the previous weekend, when, struggling in 100-degree heat on constantly undulating hills for 100 miles, I had a prolonged “I’m going to sell my bike” moment. Ever have one of those?

In the end, I had to go through with it. One of… Continue

The Longest Day

AT 6:00AM on Saturday, June 5th, 38 riders total and eight from my club left the parking lot of Eastern Wayne High School in Goldsboro, NC to attempt a 200 mile ride. The plan was to do four loops: 65 miles, 55 miles, 45 miles and 35 miles. Riders were to stay together and keep a pace of 18 miles an hour. The weather forecast was for a hot and humid, progressively windy day. There was to be a store stop in the middle of each loop and a short break between each loop.

A pretty spectacular… Continue

Louigi, the next goal is a sub 26:00 time on one of the local time trial courses. 10 miles, V-shaped profile, and a head wind seemingly in each direction.
I've also got a couple of MTB races I'd like to do, but I need to confirm the dates. I may do a century Aug 22 with some friends, and an urban adventure race in SF in Sept. It was a blast last year, but I need to start running to stand a chance of surviving!

Lou, I finally got a two year old monkey off my back this morning and got my PR on Old La Honda, 21:36. I felt absolutely horrible when the ride started and pretty much until we hit the base of the climb.
I thought for sure it would be a "hold on long enough to survive" ride. I will never figure this sport out!

Yes, I am excited to be able to do this ride this year, my charity ride since getting over my PMR stuff.
