Tour de France and Radioshack: 10 I told you so's in retrospect

My allegiances are pretty well known (at least until the Schlecks leave, if they do, at which point I will develop a multiple-personality disorder) but I believe the Shack is still the number one in…

Riding without a helmet: Fashion or Fail?

I grew up riding around without helmets. It wasn't because it was dorky or anything, but rather just because, well, no one thought of it. I feel that helmets seem like one of those "well it is so ob…

Hey Ross! You should try and ride the SLOGran Fondo. I just signed up and would love to have a friend to ride with! I will have done Levi's Gran Fondo 2 weeks before. Don't know if I could kick your butt, but I'm going to enjoy riding with some HTC Columbia pros (for the 2 seconds I'll be able to stay with them!)

Think about it. Martha offered me a place to stay!

Take the #15mpd challenge!

August 1, 2010. That is when I start my commitment to ride a minimum of 15 miles a day, every day, no exceptions, no excuses. OK - so significant muscle injuries or broken bones might be valid excuses. But everything else is out. Even the flu will be frowned upon as an excuse. Let's do it America - 15 miles a day, every day, for a year!

Consider what the average American suburban dweller does:

  • Trip to grocery store - 5-10 miles

  • Trip to Blockbuster for

Tell a cyclist to "Break an Elbow"

Pretty much everyone is familiar with the tradition in theater of wishing well to actors before a performance by stating "Break a leg." Well, now cyclists can have their own silly superstition. Next time someone is heading out for a ride, yell at
them "Break an elbow!"

We can thank Mayor Villaraigosa of Los Angeles for setting us up for this. He recently found himself involved in a

Painful start to the tour for me. Oh yea - and the riders too.

This has been a tough start to the Tour for me. First off I spend the first three days without internet access and spotty-at-best cell coverage. I mean - how in the hell am I supposed to properly enjoy and communicate about the tour without twitter?? Imagine my horror as I look on suffering alone, in isolation, as

Looks like I'll be building a fixie...

I made a deal with my 12 year old daughter: Get your grades where I want them, and I'll help you (emphasis on help) build a bike of your choice. The neighborhood fixie influence (i.e. the couple of 12 year old boys in the neighborhood) has been noticed, so a-fixed-gear-we-will-go.

I'm going to try and persuade her to go single speed instead. We'll see how it goes. Either way I'm betting it'll be a flip-flop on the back

My own personal 3 Grand Tours for this year

There are numerous races both large and small that make up the pro cycling season. However, none get quite the attention of the three grand tours: the Tour de France, the Giro de Italia (Tour of Italy) and the Vuelta a España (Tour of Spain). However, this year I'll also be doing three of my own grand tours:

This is Armstrong's Last Tour

Considering the fact that Lance Armstrong has helped to morph Twitter into pro cycling's apparent news outlet of choice, it seems fitting that he would chose that form to officially confirm that this - the 2010 Tour de France - would be his last.
