August 1, 2010. That is when I start my commitment to ride a minimum of 15 miles a day, every day, no exceptions, no excuses. OK - so significant muscle injuries or broken bones might be valid excuses. But everything else is out. Even the flu will be frowned upon as an excuse. Let's do it America - 15 miles a day, every day, for a year!
Consider what the average American suburban dweller does:
- Trip to grocery store - 5-10 miles
- Trip to Blockbuster for

I try to spread my bicycle related spending out over time. A new bike seems to be still a way out in the future. Here are some things I am planning in August and September.
- Bike fit - probably going to lead to a stem and maybe handlebars
- Tires, handlebars, grips for a cruiser I am fixing up for my daughter's 17th birthday
- Bib shorts - 2 day Bike MS ride in September calls for 2nd pair of my most comfortable riding shorts
- Repair stand - I f

In some ways I'm an information hound and I stumbled on this incase anyone is interested.
Passed by Senate, MTB Bill Now Headed to Obama
SportsOneSource Media Posted: 7/27/2010
The United States Senate today passed the U.S. Manufacturing Enhancement Act of 2010, better known as the miscellaneous tariff bill, or MTB (H.R. 4380).

Well, no video post today because there just isn't that much to post about. Today was a 45 easy spin and flush the legs out day. I am pretty tired today, but the ride did me good. It was nice to do one of my shorter routes that I do in the spring and notice how much faster I do it with about the same effort. I had to add a loop to get to40 minutes even.
Also there really isn't much to see because the stupid phone didn't record my tracks today. I don't know why. I do know that the batter…

Pretty much everyone is familiar with the tradition in theater of wishing well to actors before a performance by stating "Break a leg." Well, now cyclists can have their own silly superstition. Next time someone is heading out for a ride, yell at
them "Break an elbow!"
We can thank Mayor Villaraigosa of Los Angeles for setting us up for this. He recently found himself involved in a

Sure, we've heard and read all the comments that we need to drink plenty while we exercise outdoors. However, how much is "plenty"? Well, I decided to do my own little experiment to see just how much fluids I was expending during my rides.
What I did
(and I highly recommend you do this, too) is get on the scale first thing (sans clothes and after using the toilet). Then when I was done riding and came home, I did the same thing. I disrobed, emptied myself, and got on the scale.…

I'm sorry for not having any updates for a while, but I haven't been on my bike since a week ago Tuesday. I did make a Chinese food run on the bike today, but it'd been so long that I didn't even have my bike shoes unpacked from my last ride at Ryan's house. This feels like failure, and I'm not big on that. Tactical retreats, oh yeah, but not failure. But, really, who is. I really felt like I was back on the horse last week. Tuesday night after the ride my buddy likes to go to a blues jam right…

You watch the Tour and you think the whole country of France is nothing but rural beauty, punctuated by small villages and the occasional town that exists only as a place where bicycle races end. Perhaps your own regional pride forces you to defend the beauty of your little area of the States as a beautiful place too. Maybe it is. I like to think the Sandhills region of North Carolina is gorgeous, but you have to try to see it. On the roads of the Tour, you don’t have to try.
Like most…

I don't get it. Neither do many other locals in the Lowcountry. When our weather is what we consider the worst, all the tourists come to visit. Why? The temperature is as hot as it will get all year, and we get half of our annual rain in June, July, and August.
Yet, tourist come here in droves to complain about our weather. Come in September or October. The air is cooler and drier, and hurricanes don't come all that often. Last big 'cane was in 1959. Face it, bring a bike or rent a bike…

I was listening to the podcast last week – #12. Al was discussing his “It’s Girl Thing” women’s bike clinic he is giving, focusing on women riders who needed to learn basic bike skills. I listened to the list and thought, “Boy, that would be a great clinic to offer to us girls out here [in Georgia].”
Sure, I’ve learned a great deal since I started riding in ’08. I learned about bike types, parts, basic bike maintenance, and even learned a bunch of "bike lingo". Furthermore, I've learned…

PLEASE NOTE: This story is much better if you're drinking a cup of ProBikeWrench coffee.
Recipe for a great century:
1) Four hours of sleep, check.
2) The proper ratio of dehydration and cotton mouth, check.
3) Allergic reaction to something I ate causing indigestion Saturday night, check.
4) Feeling a little bloated Sunday morning fighting with my stomach zapping my energy levels, check.
5) Sitting in wind and mist freezing my bearings off waiting for the event to s…

I will never (never) volunteer to be a ride leader again. On Saturday at my club ride, I got nominated to lead the B group of about 20 riders. I announced the length (55 miles), pace (20mph) and no-drop status of the ride. We'll regroup at rest stops. At our first rest stop, the A group boys said they wanted to come with us and agreed to our guidelines. Then they proceeded to go 23-24mph, stringing people all down the road and taking the big ego B-groupers with them. They disappear without a clue…

Hello all!
I am sorry for the lack of posts this week but I just haven't been riding. It has been crazy hot and humid here in Maine. It's been bad enough that I never got to cool down from the Stage 4 workout (a week ago today). Heck, the vet thinks one of my Aunt's cat has suffered from heat stroke. It got to me so bad I called into work sick on Tuesday just from pure exhaustion. Now this maybe weather a lot of you are used to, but how many of those folks commuted every day in sub free…

Lost people can really baffle me. Ask me for directions then question me on the accuracy? You are then pretty much calling me a liar. Then again, you can be funny.
"Where is the beach?"
"Behind that building (point to building) and at the end of the boardwalk."
"We went there and saw the ocean, but not the beach"
"How do you get to Hunting Island State Park"
"...and once you turn right on US 21, th
